  • Idolization and ramification between globalization and ecological footprints: evidence from quantile-on-quantile approach

    Abstract

Globalization persists the tendency to alter numerous aspects of today’s world including religion, transport, language, living styles, and international relations; however, its potential to influence quality of environment is the prime concern for trade and environmental policies guidelines (Audi and Ali 2018). In response to the growing interest for identifying the dynamic relationship between globalization and environmental performance, the present study seeks to investigate the critical link between globalization and ecological footprints in top 15 globalized countries between 1970 and 2016. Applying the novel methods of quantile-on-quantile regression (QQ) and Granger causality in quantiles, the findings examine the manners in which quantiles of globalization affect the quantiles of ecological footprints and vice versa. The empirical results suggest that globalization has a long-term positive effect on ecological footprint and vice versa in case of Belgium, the Netherlands, Sweden, Switzerland, Denmark, Norway, Canada, and Portugal. On the other hand, the estimated results indicate a negative effect between globalization and ecological footprint in the case of France, Germany, the UK, and Hungary. These results extend the recent findings on the globalization–environment nexus implying that the magnitude of relationship among both variables varies with countries demanding individual focus and cautions for postulating environmental and trade policies.

  • Direct-to-Consumer Advertising (DTCA) inPharmaceutical Industry: An Inquiry from PublicPolicy to Practice and Consumers’ Perspective

    Abstract:
This research paper has addressed an explicit gap in the literature of pharmaceutical industry and healthcare management for a marketing promotion technique, direct-to-consumer advertising (DTCA), which has remained to be an academically neglected area by the scholars of Pakistan. Thus, the purpose of this research was to unearth the prevalence of direct-to-consumer advertising (DTCA) of over-the-counter (OTC) or non-prescription medicines and to assess its impact on consumer purchase behavior. Mixing of two qualitative methods comprising meta synthesis of literature followed by twenty five in-depth qualitative interviews with medical doctors, pharmacists, drug policy developers cum regulators and marketers of OTC medicines, and patients in Karachi-Pakistan (comprising medical doctors, pharmacists, and healthcare marketers) took place. Samples were selected
through snowball sampling method, while the data was analyzed through thematic analysis. The research presents quite useful insights as it has revealed that DTCA is exploited by certain unscrupulous circles, which are attempting to market their
unlicensed and unregistered medicines while with prior approval, federal drug authority only allows DTCA for only registered OTC medicines and some multivitamin complexes. It was concluded that DTCA has a profound influence only on perceptions and need recognition stage out of the five stages of consumer purchasing model. Thus, pharmaceutical and health industry experts are advised to change their attitude towards DTCA in Pakistan and must avail it as useful means of promotion and branding of medicines in Pakistan in conjunction with such othertools.

  • Impact of CSR and environmental triggers on employee green behavior: The mediating effect of employee well-being

    Abstract

This article explores the influence of corporate social responsibility (CSR) and three green triggers of environment (awareness, concern, and knowledge) on employee well-being and green behavior. The study engages the stimulus–organism–response model for testing the association between CSR and well-being of employees that leads to employee green behavior. Furthermore, social exchange theory has been utilized to describe the association between well-being and green behavior of employees. Data have been gathered through questionnaire from 509 employees working in guest-service hotels of Pakistan. Structural equation modeling has been used to test the hypotheses. Findings show that CSR, environmental concern, and knowledge have positive effect on employee well-being, whereas environmental awareness has positive but insignificant effect on employee well-being. Furthermore, environmental concern, knowledge, and well-being have a positive influence on green behavior, whereas CSR and environmental knowledge have a positive but insignificant effect. Moreover, well-being fully mediates the relationship between CSR and green behavior and between environmental awareness and green behavior of employees. However, a partial mediation was observed between environmental concern and green behavior. The findings also indicate that no mediation was found between environmental knowledge and employee green behavior. The findings suggest that the hotel managers should invest to improve employee’s awareness regarding green behavior by conducting environmental training for cultivating environmental knowledge and awareness. Moreover, CSR activities should be performed for attaining competitive edge and maintaining a balance between progress and sustainability of environment.

  • Influential factors of Islamic insurance adoption: an extension of theory of planned behavior

    Abstract

    Purpose

The role of insurance is a backbone for consumers to secure their future. It is important to know where to invest and what are the benefits. Therefore, for the Muslim segment, Islamic insurance system provides Riba (interest)-free environment where consumers invest their money and recover their losses according to sharia. This paper aims to examine the determinants that influence purchase intention of consumers toward Islamic insurance (Takaful) adoption in Pakistan with the help of the modified theory of planned behavior (TPB).

    Design/methodology/approach

The authors added four specific variables related to Islamic sharia compliance in the conventional form of the TPB. The relationship among the variables is assessed by using partial least squares structural equation modeling, while the data are collected from 305 respondents.

    Findings

The results suggest that attitude, subjective norm and perceived behavioral control are strong predictors of an Islamic insurance adoption in Pakistan. Moreover, factors such as compatibility, relative advantage and awareness have positive and significant impacts on takaful participation. A negative but insignificant relation is found between perceived risk and intention.

    Practical implications

This paper provides insight for understanding the factors that lead to consumers’ purchase intention of Islamic insurance.
